There is an increasing interest within the World Bank (and elsewhere) in promoting a greater results orientation in development work. The introduction of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is only one manifestation of that interest. However, there is often a disconnect between the setting of goals and the identification of policies to achieve the goals, in part due to the absence of a set of tools that could be used to help make the causal links more explicit. The presentation will explore the potential usefulness of a system dynamics approach to explicitly link policy actions to results and will discuss the lessons learned from applying the approach to a particular case of malaria control in Bolivia.
